Air Balloon Licensing

If you are in the US, you need a license to use it for commercial or personal purposes. Air ballooning is regulated by the FAA and the usage of new ones are only permitted after a 100-hour long flying inspection.

The regulation is not just limited to the balloons, but to the pilots too.

A trainee balloon pilot must have at least 10 hours flying instruction including six flight with an instructor, one solo flight, one ascent to 2000 feet above take off point and 2 flights of 1 hour each within 60 days prior to a rating application. The minimum age is 16.

You must also pass both written and practical tests – both oral and the flight is given by a designated FAA Inspector.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published two guides for new air balloon pilots and it’s a must read if you intend to get a pilot license.

Like any other licenses test, you would need to contact a FAA accredited air balloon pilot licensing school. If you want to reduce the cost incurred, use your own balloons instead of the school’s and try to do your own training at home, of course, along with the schools’. The licensing schools usually charge based on the hours spent at training.

The average cost for the hot air balloon pilot licensing process alone would range from $1500-4000 for a single pilot.

Even after having a valid license, you should inspect the balloon at regular intervals and the licensing papers should be up to date. The average inspection cost of hot air balloons could vary from $200-400. Keep in mind that preventive maintenance always works towards better cost efficiency and a lesser number of accidents.

    • No doubt on whether the pleasure of viewing would increase with air balloons over victoria falls. You may need to contact local sellers to know the price as we are kinda not aware of what’s happening over there! I am sure you could get some local dealers. The wind and the river is of course a hurdle. It’s more of a local issue and being someone who hasn’t visited the place, there isn’t much we can contribute on.
